Set up a leaning or extension ladder

Check the angle, the upper support and how the ladder will be secured before anyone climbs.

Illustrated guide

Measure one out for four up

  1. Upper support. Measure vertically from ground level to the point where the ladder bears on a strong support.
  2. Ladder foot. For the 4 m example, measure 1 m out along level ground. Follow the model’s angle markings and secure the ladder before climbing.

Identify the support point

Select a strong surface that can support both rails. A plastic gutter or window pane is unsuitable. Check the ground, the path used to raise the ladder and the area above for power lines.

Set the angle from the ground

For a conventional leaning ladder, use the 1-in-4 setup shown in the diagram and follow the angle markings on your model. Measure vertically to the upper support. If it is 4 m above the ground, the foot sits about 1 m horizontally from the wall.

Secure the ladder and check the locks

Secure both rails against movement at a suitable anchor. For an extension model, verify that the rung locks engage and that the sections overlap as specified by the manufacturer. Make adjustments with everyone off the ladder.

Plan the step onto a landing

For access to another level, secure the ladder and extend it at least 1 m above the landing to provide a handhold. At work, have the landing and fall exposure assessed before using the access route.
